Persephone is responsible for the ushering in of the spring. Hades desires her and comes up from the Underworld to grab her and have her as his wife as she is admiring a narcissus flower in a field. Persephone’s mother Demeter (Goddess of vegetation and agriculture) cannot find her anywhere and the world goes cold, dark and hungry without Persephone to maintain the spring. Demeter finds out through Helios, the Sun God, that her husband Zeus (Persephone’s father) made a deal with Hades (in some versions of the story) to have Persephone as his wife. Enraged, Demeter threatens to leave humanity without vegetation unless her daughter is returned. She sends Hermes to retrieve Persephone from the Underworld. Because Persephone ate of the food of Hades, pomegranate seeds, she is now bound to remain in the Underworld for six months out of the year, and the other 6 months on the surface of the Earth, where life can remain.
